Prologue 1 – St Malo to Ploermel

We arrived in the port of St Malo this morning at 08:00 local time after an 11 hour crossing from Portsmouth. It was a grey and overcast with a little damp sea mist in the air. Disembarking was quite quick for three of us whilst Paul and Lou got stuck behind a bus requiring all the passengers to show their passports at Passport Control. However by 09:00 we were on the road and heading south to a place called Ploermel which was to be our first overnight stop on the way to Saint- Nazaire.

MaryClare had done a great job with the route planning and today’s ride kept us well away from any major traffic.

At mile 16 we came across a little cafe and stopped for coffee and a mid morning snack.  There were 6 major climbs on today’s route, nothing too serious but nevertheless long and steep enough to get my cardiovascular system set up for the rest of the tour.

At around the halfway point we came across a little church and took a well earned rest and finished the remains of our mid morning snack.

With the climbs behind us we opened the throttle in places and had several stretches where we formed a good paceline.

The final 20 miles or so were along a designated cycle lane which was probably an old disused railway line and it was really pleasant riding.

We arrived at Ploemerel just after 16:00 and quickly found our hotel in town called ‘The Thy’.  Tonight we ate outside and a nice little restaurant not far from our hotel.

It is always nice to get the first day behind us and tomorrow looks like we may be getting wet along the way but will end up at Saint-Nazaire which is the official start point of the Eurovelo6 route that will take us all the way to Romania.
