Day 10 – Montceau-les-Mines to Chalon-sur-Saone

After yesterday’s ride in the rain it was good to wake up this morning to find that it was dry and a little brighter.

Mary late, Roger and Lou left at 09:00 to go to the local bike shop whilst Paul, Kris and I managed to get away around 09:45 after issues with hotel check-out.  Today was a short ride of around 40 miles, primarily downhill and we had a nice tailwind to help us along.  Most of the ride today was beside the Canal du Central and with the short mileage there was really no need to ride fast so for most of the day we just ambled along enjoying the countryside with the occasional glimpse of the sun.

Around halfway we stopped at a little Boulangerie that sold coffee and sat outside for 30 minutes or so before setting off for the final 20 miles of today’s ride.

We rolled into Chalon-sur-Saone shortly after 15:00, checked in and then stored our bikes in an underground garage in the hotel parking lot.  It was nice to be in relatively early today as it gave time to catch up on bits and pieces and prepare for tomorrow’s ride.

After a lot of discussion we finally ate tonight at a pub styled restaurant not far from the hotel called Le Saint Pierre.  I say after a lot of discussion because it seems that restaurants in France are very flexible and do not appear to keep to their opening hours.  Nevertheless we had a nice meal and enabled us to get back to the hotel for an early night.
