Day 47 – Giurgiu to Oltenita

Hotel Sud in Giurgiu is not a hotel that I would want to return to – probably the worse and most unfriendly hotel on this trip. Old fashioned rooms, unfriendly bar staff who tried to charge us for beers that we did not drink and check-in not honouring the prices we had agreed with

I was glad to leave at 09:00 this morning and again we had a relatively short day of just 47 miles.  The road out of Giurgiu was straightforward and there was a bike lane for the few miles which enabled us to make good progress.  After about 8 miles we turned off of the main road to Bucharest and immediately the road became a lot quieter.  We climbed for a few miles and spent most of the day riding along an escarpment before descending into Oltenita.

We stopped at a little market to grab some lunch and were entertained by a couple of police lieutenants, not great ambassadors for the Romanian police force but nevertheless they were interested in our trip and what we thought about Romania.

We reached Oltenita by early afternoon and have some great rooms this evening. There was no food available locally so we ordered a couple of taxi’s which took us a couple of miles to the banks of The Danube and to a restaurant that overlooked Bulgaria on the other side of the river. We have a nice meal and several beers before getting the same taxi drivers back to our hotel.

Again tomorrow we have a 50 mile ride that ends with a ferry across The Danube that will see us back in Bulgaria for a final overnight stay.
