2 months today – Pacific Ocean, California.
It’s amazing just how fast the time is going and there is so much left to do in preparation. On the positive side, training continues to go well and I managed to do several quality rides including a sportive at Amberley, West Susses at the the end of February. It was a very early start not helped with it being a very cold Sunday morning and very tempting to just stay in bed. Nevertheless I completed the 55 miles ride in just under 4 hours at an average speed of 13.8mph. Considering there was 3,291 feet of climbing to do on the course I was reasonably pleased with my performance. One of the main things I learnt was to cycle at my own pace, so very easy to go off fast with a group of more experienced cyclist and then pay the price near the end – something I need to remember when cycling across America.
It was also good that the professional bike fit I had last month at Hargroves Cycles in Fareham had paid dividends for me and I felt a lot more comfortable and at one with the bike during the ride. Main things got got changed were – new saddle, handlebars and stem and slight changes to my pedal angle which along with the new Mavic wheels I purchased at Christmas means that apart from the frame, gears and cranks I basically have a new bike from the original I bought in October 2014!
My tour duffle bags arrived from Crossroads a few days ago, a nice plum red colour. Throughout the build up we are constantly reminded not to bring luxury items with us on the tour, just bare essentials and seeing the size of the duffle bags there is no doubt that only the bear essentials are going to fit in them!
