Day 23 – Straubing to Passau

I didn’t sleep too well last night.  My room at the hotel was in the attic and overlooked the main street which was quite noisy until late. Then the church clock was striking every quarter throughout the night which didn’t help either.

Rollout was at 08:30 and we were a couple of minutes early as we left Straubing.  For the past couple of days my front disc has been rubbing slightly whilst nothing serious, it is nevertheless annoying.  A couple of miles out I decided to stop and fix the problem and found some shade under a road bridge whilst the others continued on.  I had tried a temporary fix a couple of days ago but this time decided that I needed to realign the brake calipers. After a couple of attempts I had it solved and the front wheel was running smoothly again. It had taken me probably 15 mins to fix so I knew I was now around 3 miles behind the rest. I wasn’t worried as I have found myself in similar positions on previous trips and so I decided to ride on at my own pace.  I stopped a few times to take photo’s and to enjoy the mountains I could see in the distance.

After about 12 miles I hit a route closed sign so detoured around knowing that I was cycling parallel to the original route.  I finally came to a small road which connected back to the trail only to see Paul and Lou cycling in completely the opposite direction. It later transpired that they all had ignored the road closure sign and had to back track when the trail became impassable.  Now regrouped we cycled on together again and with a tail wind and warm temperatures made quick progress.

We stopped at Lidl in Deggendorf to restock supplies and also found a little coffee and cake shop early afternoon for a quick refreshment stop. With then just 25 miles to go we hit the pedals as there was forecast of thunderstorms late afternoon.

We arrived in Passau around 15:00 and after storing our bikes, Lou and I sat outside with a cool beer.  Tonight we ate local as this was our last night in Germany and tomorrow we move into Austria for 4 nights.
