Day 41 – Orsova to Crivina

Today was a short 40 mile ride to Crivina and based on the enjoyable experience yesterday we were looking forward to a similar ride today.

We had a bit of a lie in this morning not leaving until 09:00 and then stopped just a mile up the road at a local bakery for breakfast. Eating an apple strudel for breakfast is not the normal thing to eat but it was delicious and set me up for the rest of the day.

The first 10 miles of today’s ride was horrendous, an extremely busy highway, lots of big articulated trucks that gave you very little room when passing and yet again, being chased by dogs. We rode most of the way on a very narrow shoulder that petered out completely when the road crossed a bridge. There was even a couple of short tunnels to add to the drama but we all survived to ride another day.

We stopped for coffee at a place called Drobeta-Turnu Severin and some had breakfast but I made do with a coffee and milk shake which is all I felt like. I know I haven’t been taking in enough fluids during this trip so drinking for me is often more important than eating.

The first few miles of the ride after our stop were again on busy roads but after a few miles we turned off onto a much quieter and enjoyable road.

We managed to dodge a thunder and lightning rain shower today and reached out hotel in Crivina early afternoon. The place is out in the country with no local shops or facilities but very peaceful.

Our host kindly cooked us a lovely meal this evening which we ate outside and we sampled the local beer once again! Tomorrow is our final ride of a 10 day stint and we move into Bulgaria to Viden. I really need a rest day now and am looking forward to a nice lie in and chilling before the final push to The Black Sea.
